For something a little less ordinary….here are our choices for the best luxury hotels in Athlone in 2022
(Note: there are no 5 Star hotels in Athlone as yet, all of our choices below are 4 star)
THE SHERATON HOTEL:
The fabulous Sheraton Hotel is, for us, the finest luxury hotel in Athlone. It will cost you more than most hotels of course, but it is an exceptional place with some of its suites being among the finest hotel rooms in the country. It also has tremendous facilities, including a swimming pool and spa facilities.

THE HODSON BAY HOTEL:
The 4 Star Hodson Bay Hotel is an Athlone classic. It has been around a while but keeps with the times and has a terrific location on the banks of Lough Ree, just outside the town. It definitely has the best facilities for kids with its large leisure centre, and adults can be soothed with its great spa facilities, which include an outdoor hot tub and an array of health and beauty treatments.

THE RADISSON BLU HOTEL:
The 4 Star modern design hotel, the Radisson Blu, Athlone vies with the Sheraton for the title of most luxurious in the town. It might not have the same wow factor as the Sheraton but it is more charming and intimate, and it has a lovely location by the banks of the Shannon, right in the town centre.

WINEPORT LODGE HOTEL:
Wineport Lodge is a relaxing, 4 Star boutique retreat on a peaceful shore of Lough Ree, a few minutes’ by car from Athlone town centre. It is a place to unwind with meandering walks, great food, wine and spa facilities, and all in a very stylish boutique luxury setting.

THE PRINCE OF WALES HOTEL:
Right in the centre of town, the 4 Star Prince of Wales is an Athlone institution which has been extensively modernized and now easily competes with the international chain hotels, the Sheraton and Radisson Blu, in terms of luxury and class. And with decades of history behind it, it retains a certain amount of old style character and charm.
