The 4 Star Sheraton Hotel is without doubt the finest luxury hotel in the town of Athlone where its 12 storey glazed tower is fast becoming a local landmark. It has extremely plush rooms and suites, superb spa facilities, a 20 metre indoor swimming pool and excellent food and drink.

THE ACCOMMODATION:

They have a broad selection of rooms and suites, 170 in total, at the Sheraton, all of which are king size double or twins with the exception of the family rooms which can sleep up to four on two queen size beds. Check out your options on the booking page here.

The rooms range from what they term classic rooms to superior and deluxe rooms, all of which are roughly equal in terms of space, comfort and luxury, but the superior and deluxe rooms offer a much better experience. They are on the upper floors and have enormous floor to ceiling windows from where to enjoy some commanding views over the town and the River Shannon.

Then there are the suites. The entry level are junior and studio suites which come with seating/lounging areas but as they are not so much larger and more impressive than the higher class of rooms they are, for us, probably not worth the extra premium.

What are worth the extra premium though are the Penthouse Suites and the Presidential Suite. They are undoubtedly Athlone’s finest hotel rooms and have the feel of chic, ultra modern, luxury apartments.

The two 55 m² Penthouse Suites occupy corner sections of an upper floor while the 75 m² Presidential suite covers the top floor. Both have semi-separate areas for lounging, catching up on some business or private dining, and have the best views of the entire hotel.

The Presidential fills some of its extra space with a dining table area and an outside balcony, and though the bathrooms in the accommodation generally are of an extremely high standard, the extremely plush marble bathroom in this suite tops the lot.

FACILITIES:

The Sheraton Athlone is a four star hotel and comes with some superb facilities, most notably the 20 metre swimming pool and the Sirana Spa Centre which has three feature pools, a steam room, a state of the art gym and fitness centre, and various treatment and relaxation suites.

A huge variety of services are offered here; massages, facials, hair and scalp treatments, body wraps, body scrubs, waxing, pedicures and manicures, various daily fitness classes etc. plus there is an onsite spa restaurant and cafe.

The main restaurant at the Sheraton Athlone is the La Provence Brasserie which serves high quality Irish and French classic cuisine in a refined atmosphere.

For more informal dining, and great coffee, there is the Harvest Café, while the hotel’s main bar, The S Bar & Bistro, serves classic Irish bar food, has a full range of drinks including cocktails and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

There is a 24 hour reception and 24 hour room service at the Sheraton Athlone, a business centre and conference rooms, and on-site parking.

THE LOCATION:

Sheraton Athlone Hotel is in the heart of the town, near the River Shannon and about five minutes walk from the bus and train stations. Various riverside bars and restaurants are also just minutes walk away as is Athlone Castle, St. Peter and Paul’s Church and the, publicly owned, Luan Art Gallery.

There is a concierge service at the hotel and guests can also enjoy discounts for various local attractions such as the old monastry of Clonmacnoise, boat trips on the River Shannon, the craft village of Ballinahown and Celtic Roots Studio.
